Reba McEntire knows what it’s like to go through sadness and loss. In 1991, an airplane crash during a concert killed seven members of the country star’s band and her tour manager.
The star and her band played at a private event in San Diego on March 16, 1991. At Brown Field Municipal Airport, two planes were ready to take the band members to Fort Wayne, Indiana, for their next gig.
It was just McEntire, her then-husband and manager Narvel Blackstock, and her stylist Sandi Spika in San Diego for the night. The band members and tour manager took off.
In a sad 2012 interview with Oprah Winfrey, McEntire talked about what happened next. The first plane that took off crashed not far from the airport, but the second plane got where it was going without any damage.
“Everyone on board died when the tip of the wing hit a rock on the edge of Otay Mountain,” McEntire told Oprah. “Narvel went to our pilot and told him what had happened as soon as we were told.”
“Around 2 or 3 a.m., Narvel came back to my hotel room and told me that one of the planes had crashed. I asked, ‘Are they OK?’” He replied, “I don’t think so.” “But aren’t you sure?” I inquired. He said, “I don’t think so.”
McEntire says that they were eager to find out more about the disaster.
She paused as tears came to her eyes and said, “Narvel was going room to room with a phone and ringing.” “I’m sorry, it’s been 20 years, but I think it hurts still,” she said. “But I can picture that.” Narvel is moving quickly back and forth.
Friends like Vince Gill and Dolly Parton offered to let McEntire use their bands to finish the tour, but she turned them down. Her next album, For My Broken Heart, was a tribute to the band members she had lost. It went straight to No. 1 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart and sold four million copies in its first week.
Most of the time, McEntire remembers the people who died that day on the anniversary of the tragedy. In 2014, on the anniversary of the crash, she used Instagram to remember it. The tragedy happened 25 years ago in 2016. In 2016, she took a memorable trip to San Diego and posted about it on social media to share with her fans.
He wrote, “Today is the 25th anniversary of the plane crash.” “In November of last year, I went back to San Diego and flew to the scene of the accident.” They must know how much we miss them, though. I’m very sorry for your loss andwill be praying for all of the families and friends.
